Safe Sleep Safe Baby

The safe practice of co-sleeping builds the foundation for safer sleep patterns and in turn results in the reduction of the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Sleep Patterns

Infant sleep patterns include two-to-three hour burst of sleep. There are four or five stages of sleep:

1. Drowsiness and drifting off to sleep

2. REM sleep

3. Light sleep

4 and 5. Deep non-REM sleep (quiet sleep)

Most cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) happen during REM sleep. SIDS is most common when infants fall into deep sleep for extended periods of time.

Co-sleeping offers multiple opportunities for arousals from movements and sounds. Infants often replicate the rhythm of breaths from their co-sleeper and are periodically exposed to carbon dioxide, the byproduct of those breaths, which then stimulates the respirations of the infant reducing the risk of SIDS.
